Every leader needs a teacher, and for me, that teacher is Great Grandmaster Dr. Tae Yun Kim, a Little Giant with Extraordinary Wisdom and Insight.
In the past, I was the ‘It Girl’—thriving in the spotlight and signing with Ford Modeling Agency as a runway model at 19. Yet, the glitz and glamour left me with a glaring void. Thankfully, I met Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim during her book signing tour, and from that moment, my life began to transform. Grandmaster Kim’s teachings have brought me balance, discipline, and a renewed sense of purpose, giving me the tools to climb even higher in my life’s journey. She has been my spiritual guide, and for that, I am forever grateful.
In the 70s, I trained under Dr. Kim, a trailblazing Grandmaster who shattered barriers for women in martial arts. Guided by her bold mantra, “HE CAN DO, SHE CAN DO, WHY NOT ME!” she fought relentlessly for women’s rights to compete, leading to the historic introduction of women’s divisions at the 1978 Pre-World Games in Seoul. Under her leadership, I earned the first-ever Gold Medal for America. Dr. Kim’s courage and vision transformed martial arts, forever; opening doors for generations of women. Her inspiring legacy continues to impact my life every day.
As a coach, Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim holds one of the most impressive records in U.S. history. In 1978, at the Pre-World Games in South Korea, the U.S. Women’s team she led achieved an unprecedented feat: winning GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE medals. Remarkably, the men’s team won none. Continuing this legacy of excellence, Marcia Hall secured another GOLD medal in Taiwan in 1979, making her a back-to-back international champion. Our Great Grandmaster is truly THE BEST!
